The 2017 Fete

As entry is free the numbers that attended the Bodmin Hospital Fete on 24th June cannot be verified, however seasoned members of the organisers, the Bodmin Hospital League of Friends, agreed that the crowds were the largest they had seen in the 50 year history of this happy event!

Much of the attraction this year must be laid at the door of BBC Radio Cornwall’s Donna Birrell who opened the fete with delightful words, complimenting the League of Friends on the attractive site and saying how wonderful it was, in these times of dreadful happenings in the world, to attend an event that was so full of happiness and love. She visited nearly every stand buying many items and talking to everybody. And what a huge variety of stalls and diversions were on offer!

For entertainment St Breward Silver Band’s mellifluous music set the scene with Fire Bird International, Tina Roberts beautifully compereing the whole event; Avalon Youth Theatre performed excerpts from their latest show, Bugsy Malone enthralling the audience and the irrepressible Future Youth Dance wowed everyone with their fantastic dancing. And then the fearsome Pirates of St Piran burst on the scene with great fun and saucy sea shantys! The entertainment ended with Tina herself singing – it is the first time these organisers had heard her – wow – what a beautiful voice!

The main marquee was packed to the guy ropes with a multitude of stalls offering everything from delicious cakes and home made produce, an enormous bric-a-brac stand, book shop, a forest of plants on the flower stand, many of which donated so kindly by local nurseries and each ward of the hospital provided their own attractive stands with great ingenuity and variety of offers - the nurses who gave up their own time running their stands were delighted with the generosity of the visitors who spent more than ever before.

Further entertainment was provided by a fairground from Kernow Party Karts with Go Karts, Wipe Out, Bouncy Castle and Blow up play rooms. There were skittles, face painting, Draw-a-Straw, a Wheel of Fortune with prizes from Wadebridge Wines, Trehellas House, Bridge Bike Hire and Martin and Budge Menswear among others, the hilarious Human Fruit Machine whose game was about as straight as their bananas. The ‘inner man’ was well provided by the brilliant Candy floss team - Memory Lane Sweets, the Strawberries, from Trevathan and Cream from Williams Dairy, Cup Cake Decorating challenge from Malcolm Barnecutts, the GFM team supplied the teas and delicious hamburgers and Sharps Brewery provided a barrel of beer for the raffle.

Centre stage was taken up by the very popular Family Dog Show with winner of ‘Best in Show’ Chris O’Neil and his pal ‘Woody’ who also won Best Looking Dog. There were rosettes for all the winners very kindly donated my Marlin Rosettes and the most beautiful prizes for each class so carefully put together and donated by Moor Pets of Bodmin. With very grateful thanks to our lovely Dog Judge, Jenny Hick - it was truly tail wagging show.

Susie Gore, Chairman of the Bodmin Hospital league of Friends, thanked all who attended for their generosity with more that £6,500 raised over the afternoon. She also thanked the many helpers: FLEET, Bodmin Rotary Club, Bodmin Lions Club, Wadebridge Social Club for their unlimited help as well as the many friends and family, without whom the ‘show could not go on’ and last but certainly not least the generosity of local businesses who either contributed to the funding of the fete or supplied goods and services free of charge or at cost: Mid Cornwall Brokers, Hawkins Motors, Gynn Construction, Bodmin Flooring Centre, Home Instead, Nute’s Vet, GFM, West End Motors, WTW Cinemas who sponsored St Breward Silver Band, The North & Mid Cornwall Advertisers, Moor Pets, Marlin Rosettes, Trehellas House, Wadebridge Wines, Williams Dairy, Trevathan Farm, Sharps Brewery, Bridge Bike Hire, Malcolm Barnecutt Bakeries, Bodmin Funeral Services, Eventz UK Marquees, Ruses Gas, Bodmin Nursery, Pinsla Nursery, Trelawney Garden Centre, R J Bray & Son, Brandon Tool Hire, Golden Fry, Kier Services, Wiltshire Farm Foods, Torch Fire Protection, ROCS Event Catering, Auto Graph Signs and Phoenix Print
