What a great 2018 fete!
The League of Friends of Bodmin Hospital held their annual Fete on a glorious sunny afternoon on Saturday 30th June. The weather was only outshone by the large crowds who attended, generously spending their money on the many attractions and stalls on offer.
What was particularly pleasing was the large number of teenagers and young people making up the happy crowd, this was probably due to the presence of Benji Matthews of X-Factor fame, who opened the fete! Benji gave an energetic exhibition of his self composed songs and dance to the delight of the youngsters – and their Mums and Dads!. Look out Glastonbury - Benji is coming!
The crowd were introduced to the show by Terry Williams, the Bodmin Town Crier with his Brian Blessed style voice and away they went to enjoy the delightful dance routines offered by Future Youth Dance, Firebird Tina Roberts and her miniature performing stallion, Mr Wacky, the children’s entertainer and Pixie Witch, a new Cornish Band.
All the fun of the fair was provided brilliantly by Kernow Party Karts with their Bouncy Castles, Wipe Out and Go Karts. Close by was the beautiful Miniature Steam Train owned by Malcolm Welch and, of course, the great favourite Family Dog Show with over 60 entries, dogs from Great Danes to tiny Collie pups competed for the splendid prizes supplied by Moor Pets, pet suppliers of Bodmin and beautiful rosettes provided by Marlin Rosettes. ‘The winners well deserved their awards as the standards were of a very high order’ said Dog Judge, Jenny Hick.
The Bodmin Hospital Fete is an old fashioned Cornish ‘village’ fete for the whole family and provides a superb selection of outdoor grub: Ice Cream provided by Bodmin Rotary Club, Strawberries & Cream provided by Willaims Dairy and Trevathan Farm, burgers and hot dogs by GFM, Candy Floss by Memory Lane Sweets, a tea tent and, of course, Cornish Pasties.
In the main marquee, provided by Eventzuk, were a wonderland of stalls bearing home cooked goodies including cakes, tarts, jams, chutneys and so much more, an extensive bric-a-brac and book stand and the magnificent plant store with hundreds of flowers, shrubs, trees etc all supplied free from local nurseries: Bodmin Nursery, Pinsla Nursery and Trelawney Garden Centre. All the Hospital wards had their own stands also with bric-a-brac, books, sweets etc and offering many fun games for prizes all raising money for their wards, cheerfully manned by the staff from the wards – in their own time – earning desperately needed cash for items not supplied by the NHS. They made the marquee a lively and happy place.
The committee were delighted with the results of their annual show and are more than grateful for the support from sponsors, myriad helpers and volunteers, too numerous to fully list, but everyone involved have their heartfelt thanks and appreciation.

Family Dog Show
There were 10 different classes for entry into the Dog Show from the waggiest tail, most obedient dog to the dog the judge, Jennny Hick, would most like to take home. The last class was ‘Best in Show’ which was won by Lola, a Border Collie whose handler, Hollie Swallow from Roche was delighted with her ‘best friends’’ efforts to pick up the beautiful rosette and handsome main prize.
